Where it comes from

The story of Jaret

Jared is the father of Enoch in Genesis 5, and the name was used by English Puritans along with the rest of the antediluvian list. Its American life is chiefly modern: it was rare until the 1960s, rose steeply through the 1970s — helped by a character in the television western The Big Valley — and stayed in the American top hundred for two decades. Respellings followed as they always do, and Jarred, Jarett, Jarrett and Jaret all appear behind it; Jaret peaks in 1998, at the far end of the parent name's run. Jarrett is separately an English surname from Gerald, which complicates the family further.

Descent

From Hebrew Yered or Yāred, generally connected to the verb yārad, to go down, giving descent or the one who descends. The reading is standard but not certain; the name belongs to the antediluvian list, whose members' names are frequently obscure. The Jaret spelling is an American variant of Jared, and the change from d to t has no separate history.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaret went to 17 boys in 2025, but Jarrett and Jarett are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 82, which makes it the 846th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,553 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 20,830 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,475 for Jaret itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
