Where it comes from

The story of Ellise

The station on Ellis Island processed twelve million arrivals between 1892 and 1954, and the myth that it renamed them is comprehensively false. Passenger manifests were written by shipping company clerks at the port of departure, in the passenger's own language and often by a fellow countryman, and the inspectors at Ellis Island checked arrivals against those lists rather than writing anything down. Most inspectors were themselves immigrants and the station employed interpreters covering dozens of languages. Names did change, extensively, but they changed afterwards and usually by the family's own decision: to be pronounceable, to get work, to sound American. The island itself is named for Samuel Ellis, a merchant who owned it in the 1770s, which is a more ordinary story than the one attached to it.

Hebrew Eliyahu, my God is Yah

Ellise is a respelling of Elise or of Ellis. Elise is a French short form of Elisabeth. Ellis is a separate surname from Elias, the Greek form of Elijah, Hebrew Eliyahu, my God is Yah. The two have converged in American spelling and the record does not separate them. The peak is 2004.

Ellise sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 37 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

About 1 girl in 945 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Ellise itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
