Beethoven may not have written Fur Elise. The manuscript is lost, the piece was published forty years after his death from a copy, and the editor may have misread the dedication: Therese Malfatti, whom Beethoven proposed to in 1810, owned the autograph. One of the most played pieces of music in the world may be named after a transcription error.

Where it comes from

The story of Ellyse

The Bagatelle in A minor was written in 1810 and not published in Beethoven's lifetime. Ludwig Nohl published it in 1867 from a manuscript he said was in the possession of Therese Malfatti, and the manuscript has never been seen since. Beethoven's handwriting was notoriously difficult, and the proposal that Nohl misread Therese as Elise has been made repeatedly since the 1920s. Other candidates have been suggested, including a singer named Elisabeth Rockel, which would make Elise correct after all. What is certain is that we have no autograph, that the piece was published from a source now lost, and that the person named in its title cannot be identified. The name Elise itself is entirely straightforward: a German clip of Elisabeth, the same name as Elizabeth, Isabel, Lisbeth and Betty.

Meaning

Hebrew Elisheba, my God is an oath

Elise is a German and French short form of Elisabeth, from Hebrew Elisheba, from el, God, and sheva, an oath or the number seven, usually read as my God is an oath or God is abundance. Ellyse is an American respelling with a doubled l and a y. It peaks in 1988.

About 1 girl in 945 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Ellyse itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Hebrew meaning is settled and the name family is ancient.
  • Elle and Ellie are both current short forms.
  • The sound is elegant and easy to say.
What to consider
  • Elise and Elyse are both more common spellings.
  • The doubled l invites a front-stressed misreading.
  • The final consonant is voiced in French and German and not in English.
