Doran
Masculine · “Irish "exile”
Doran is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,656 boys against 55 girls since 1880.
Early Irish law had no concept of a person without a kin-group, and Doran names exactly that. The deorad was a legal outsider — an exile, a stranger, a pilgrim — a category defined by having no kindred to answer for him, which in a kin-based system meant having almost no rights at all.

The story of Doran
Early Irish law was built on the kin-group: legal capacity, liability and compensation all ran through the family, and a man's standing was his family's standing. A person outside that structure — a deorad — had a specially defined and very limited position, and the law tracts discuss the category at length. The same word covered the voluntary exile, the peregrinus, who left Ireland for the sake of God: an ideal that sent Irish monks to Iona, Lindisfarne, Bobbio and Saint Gall and shaped the intellectual life of early medieval Europe. So the name holds both the outcast and the missionary. The American figures peak in 1954.
Meaning
Irish "exile, stranger, pilgrim"
From Ó Deoradháin, a descendant of Deoradhán, from deorad, an exile or stranger, with a diminutive ending. The word covered both the outcast and the religious pilgrim who left home deliberately, and Irish law treated both as being outside the ordinary kin structure. The English surname Doran and the given name descend from it.

The Cipriano test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Doran's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cipriano climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cipriano's path sketches the road Doran is walking now.
Doran sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
