The story of Dmitriy
Romanisation systems for Russian multiply because they are built for different purposes. The scholarly system preserves every letter so the Cyrillic can be reconstructed exactly. The BGN and PCGN system, used by the American and British governments, aims at approximate pronunciation for English readers. The ISO system uses diacritics. Passport transliteration in Russia itself has changed several times since 1990, most recently towards a system that produces different spellings from the one used a decade earlier, so members of the same family can hold documents with different surnames. For an American record the practical consequence is that the spelling records a bureaucratic moment rather than anything about the name. Dmitriy with a final y-i is the signature of one particular system, and it dates the paperwork more reliably than it describes the person.
Meaning
Greek, of Demeter
Dmitriy is a transliteration of Russian Dmitri, from Greek Demetrios, belonging to Demeter, the goddess of grain. The final -iy writes the Russian ending exactly as the United States Board on Geographic Names system requires; the traditional English form drops it to -i, the British system uses -y, and the scholarly system uses -ii. All four are the same name. The American peak is 1997.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dmitriy went to 8 boys in 2025, but Dmitri and Dmitry are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 55, which makes it the 873rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,037 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 31,056 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 213,510 for Dmitriy itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kalonji test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dmitriy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kalonji climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kalonji's path sketches the road Dmitriy is walking now.
Dmitriy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
