The story of Dmitry
Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki was a soldier martyred in the fourth century and became one of the great warrior saints of the Eastern church, second only to Saint George. His cult spread with Byzantine Christianity into the Slavic world, and Dmitry became one of the standard Russian names — borne by Dmitry Donskoy, who defeated the Golden Horde in 1380, and by Mendeleev, Shostakovich and a long list of others. English transliterates the Russian as Dmitri, Dmitry, Dimitri or Dmitrii, none of which is standard.
Meaning
of Demeter; devoted to the earth goddess
Greek Demetrios is formed from Demeter, the goddess of grain and agriculture, with an adjectival ending — so the name means belonging to her. Demeter's own name is generally read as containing meter, 'mother', with a disputed first element that may mean earth or grain. Demetrios was extremely common in the Greek world and passed into Christian use through Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. Russian Dmitry drops the first vowel.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dmitry went to 14 boys in 2025, but Dmitri and Dmitriy are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 55, which makes it the 873rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,270 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 31,056 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 122,005 for Dmitry itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Faraz test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dmitry's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Faraz climbed just as high around 1990, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Faraz's path sketches the road Dmitry is walking now.
Dmitry sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
