Faraz
Masculine · “height”
Urdu and Persian poetry runs on one form. A ghazal is a set of couplets, each one able to stand alone, all sharing a rhyme and a repeated closing phrase, and the poet signs the last couplet with their own pen name. It has been the dominant lyric form for a thousand years.

The story of Faraz
The ghazal's rules are strict and the effect is unusual: because each couplet is complete in itself, a ghazal is less an argument than a series of separate strikes on the same subject, and audiences at a public reading respond couplet by couplet. The last one contains the poet's takhallus, the pen name, addressed to themselves — so the poem signs itself out loud. Ahmad Faraz, one of the most read Urdu poets of the twentieth century, took this word as his. He was imprisoned and then exiled for poems read as criticism of a military government, spent years abroad, and returned; his work is still recited from memory across Pakistan and northern India.

The Levelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Faraz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Levelle climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Levelle's path sketches the road Faraz is walking now.
Faraz sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Persian meaning that is an ordinary current word.
- Two syllables and five letters, with nothing difficult in either.
- It belongs to a living literary tradition with a documented modern bearer.
- English speakers move the stress and change the vowels.
- Faraaz and Firaz are both transliterated, so the spelling will occasionally be queried.
- Outside South Asian and Iranian families the reference will need explaining.
