The story of Dmitri
Demetrios reached the Slavic world with Orthodox Christianity, carried above all by the cult of a soldier-martyr of Thessaloniki. Russian reduced it hard, dropping the first vowel entirely to give Dmitri — a shape Russian tolerates easily and English does not. Several Russian princes and one tsar carried it, and it has been among the standard Russian men's names for centuries. American records show Dmitri, Dimitri and Demitri.
