Where it comes from

The story of Servando

Servandus and Germanus were, by tradition, brothers martyred near Cádiz in the early fourth century, and their cult became established in Andalusia; San Servando gives its name to a castle at Toledo. The name stayed in Spanish use and traveled to Mexico, where Servando Teresa de Mier was a Dominican friar and one of the more colorful advocates of Mexican independence, repeatedly imprisoned and repeatedly escaping. American records show Servando with Mexican-American families through the twentieth century, with a peak in the 1950s, and steady low use since.

Meaning

One who is to be preserved or kept

From Latin servandus, the gerundive of servare, to keep, guard or preserve. The gerundive expresses obligation or intention: the one who must be kept. The reading is settled. The root is servare, to save, not servire, to serve; the two are separate Latin verbs and the name belongs to the first.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and unusually tender for a Latin name.
  • It is spelled identically in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
  • Three open syllables are easy for an English speaker.
What to consider
  • The first syllable resembles the English word serve, which is a different Latin verb.
  • It is unfamiliar outside Spanish-speaking communities.
  • It has been rare in American records throughout its history.
