The story of Fausto
Faustus was a genuine Roman name, borne by a dictator's son and by several early Christians and saints, and Italian and Spanish kept it as Fausto. Quite separately, a sixteenth-century German legend attached the name to a scholar who sold his soul, and Marlowe and Goethe made that story one of the central texts of European literature. The name has stayed in ordinary Italian and Spanish use throughout, unbothered.

The Gaylan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fausto's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gaylan climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gaylan's path sketches the road Fausto is walking now.
Fausto sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that is straightforwardly good — fortunate.
- A documented Roman origin with continuous use in Italy and Spain since.
- Every letter is said, so Italian and Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- The Faust legend is the first association for educated English speakers, and it ends badly.
- English readers may say FAW-sto rather than FOW-sto.
- Fausto and Faustino are both used and relatives may prefer the longer one.
