Diante
Masculine
Diante is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,376 boys against 20 girls since 1880.
Dante is a nickname, and it means what Duran means. The poet was Durante degli Alighieri, and Durante is Latin durans, enduring — the same word behind the French Durand and the Spanish Durán. Dante is the clipped familiar form that swallowed the original.

Our story of Diante
Clipped forms sometimes replace the names they came from so completely that the original disappears. Durante degli Alighieri was baptized with the full name; Dante is the shortened form used by his contemporaries, and it is the only one anyone now uses — the Commedia is by Dante, and Durante is a footnote. English has the same pattern with Tony for Anthony, Bill for William and Ned for Edward, but none of them has fully replaced its source. Italian did it more thoroughly, and it did it again with Beppe for Giuseppe and Nino for Antonino. The odd result here is that Dante and Duran are the same word, arriving in American naming by completely different routes six centuries apart. Diante, peaking in 1992, takes the ending from one of them.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning as a whole. Di- is a created prefix; -ante is an ending drawn from Dante and from the -ante names of the 1980s and 1990s. Dante itself is a clipping of Italian Durante, from Latin durans, enduring, from durare, to last — the same root as durable and endure. That meaning belongs to Durante and does not transfer to Diante.

The Derric test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Diante's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Derric climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Derric's path sketches the road Diante is walking now.
