Derric

Masculine · “ruler of the people”

1958high 1979
Rare todaygiven to only a few children a year
rare

Derric drops the k that the commoner spelling carries, and the c does exactly the same job. The name comes from a Germanic compound about ruling a people, arrived in English through Dutch, and shares its letters with a piece of equipment and, in another form, with a Scottish dagger. Only one of those three is related to the others.

Derric first appears in US birth records in 1958 — 67 years ago. The typical Derric alive today was born around 1983, making them about 42 years old. About 1,300 people named Derric are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Derric most popular?

Derric peaked in 1973, reaching #1294 nationally. See the whole 1973 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Derric

The Dutch form of this name is Dirk, and a dirk is also a long dagger carried in the Scottish Highlands. The two are not related. The weapon's name appears in English in the seventeenth century, spelled several ways, and its origin has never been established: proposals have connected it to Gaelic, to Dutch and to German words, and none has carried. Dr Johnson's dictionary guessed at an Erse origin and modern etymologists say unknown. So a Dutch man's name and a Highland dagger share a spelling by coincidence, which is a small thing and worth knowing because the assumption that they are connected is very widespread and is not supported by anything.

Meaning

ruler of the people

Two Germanic elements, one meaning a people and one meaning ruler, and the reading is settled. The name reached English from the Dutch form rather than the German one, which is why it is shorter than its German cousin. The dropped k changes nothing: c and ck spell the same sound at the end of a syllable, and the choice is visual.

How the name formed

  1. A Germanic compound of people and ruler
  2. Shortened in Dutch to Derk and Dirk
  3. Derek and Derrick in English use
  4. Derric, with the k dropped

Pronouncing Derric

DER-ik

Two syllables, stress on the first. The c and the ck spellings are identical in sound; the difference is that ck is the usual English convention after a short vowel and a single c looks continental.

Derric sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 42 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Derric sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar and needs no coaching.
  • Rick is available immediately and is a complete name on its own.
  • It carries a genuine Germanic meaning with an unbroken record.
What to consider
  • Derrick and Derek are both commoner and this spelling will be converted into one.
  • The dropped k is inaudible, so the spelling has to be given every time.
  • It is firmly of the middle of the twentieth century.
