Our story of Daevon
Most English counties are named for a settlement, a river or a direction: Yorkshire for York, Hampshire for Southampton, Norfolk and Suffolk for the north and south folk of the East Angles. Only a few keep the name of the people who were there before the English arrived. Devon is the Dumnonii; Kent is the Cantiaci; Cumbria is the Cymry, the same word the Welsh use for themselves. Those names survived because the regions kept a British-speaking population longest — Dumnonia was an independent British kingdom into the ninth century, and Cornish was spoken into the eighteenth. So a modern American name built on the syllable Devon rests on a Celtic tribal name that outlived the tribe by fifteen hundred years, which none of its bearers has any reason to know. Daevon peaks in 2000.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning as a compound. Da- is a created American prefix. Devon, the likeliest stem, is from the Dumnonii, a British tribe whose own name is generally connected to a word for deep, perhaps in the sense of deep valleys or of a deity of the deep. Daevon has no documented reading, and the tribal etymology does not transfer to it.
