Our story of Cordarius
The Behistun inscription is one of the most consequential texts in the history of scholarship. Darius I had it cut into a cliff face in Persia around 520 BC, in three languages and three cuneiform scripts — Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian — recounting how he took the throne. Because the Old Persian was the simplest of the three and could be partly guessed at, and because all three said the same thing, it worked as a Rosetta Stone for cuneiform: Henry Rawlinson and others used it from the 1830s to decipher Akkadian, opening the entire literature of Mesopotamia. Darius's own name appears throughout it, and it is one of very few personal names whose meaning is attested by the bearer. Cordarius, peaking in 1992, is that name with an American prefix on the front — an ancient royal title serving as a suffix.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning as a compound. Cor- is a created American prefix. Darius is Greek Dareios from Old Persian Dārayavauš, generally read as holding firm the good, from a verb meaning to hold and a word for good. Cordarius joins the created prefix to that name and has no documented reading of its own.

The Quitman test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cordarius's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Quitman climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Quitman's path sketches the road Cordarius is walking now.
Cordarius sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Four syllables means it will be shortened in daily use.
- Cordarrius and Kordarius compete as spellings.
- The compound as a whole has no meaning to pass on.
