The story of Brown
Color vocabularies do not map neatly between languages or across time, and English has changed a good deal. Old English had no word for orange — the fruit and the color word both arrived from Arabic and French in the Middle Ages — and it grouped shades differently: brūn included burnished metal, hæwen covered blue and grey, and read included what we would call orange and purple. The shining sense of brown survives fossilized in Beowulf and in weapon descriptions, and it explains what would otherwise be a puzzling image. Brown as an American given name comes from the surname; the figures peak in 1881.
