The story of Artie
The historical question is genuinely open. The Historia Brittonum of about 830 lists twelve battles under a leader called Arthur; the earlier Gildas, writing closer to the period, names a British victory but not its commander. From the twelfth century Geoffrey of Monmouth built the full legend, and French romance added the Round Table, Lancelot and the Grail. Whether any of it rests on a real fifth- or sixth-century figure is unresolved, and serious historians hold positions from cautious acceptance to outright rejection. The name became enormously popular in nineteenth-century Britain after Tennyson; Artie as a registered American name peaks in 1882.
Meaningnot established
Not established — possibly Welsh "bear" or Latin Artorius
Two main proposals. Welsh arth, a bear, possibly with a second element, would give a bear-name of the kind common in Celtic tradition. Alternatively the name is the Roman family name Artorius, of unknown further origin, borrowed into Brittonic. Neither is established. Artie is an English diminutive of Arthur with the Scots -ie ending.
