Where it comes from

The story of Artie

Naming a daughter after a father or grandfather was ordinary practice in nineteenth-century America, and the familiar form was often what was written down — which is how Artie, Willie, Johnnie and Jimmie all hold places on the girls' chart. Artemisia offered a second route, a classical name in modest use in the same decades. Feminine Artie peaked around 1890.

Meaningscholars disagree

Not established

Read through Arthur, the meaning is genuinely unrecovered — the Celtic art, 'bear', is the commonest proposal, but a Roman family name Artorius is equally possible and nothing settles it. Read through Artemisia, it points to the goddess Artemis, whose own name is pre-Greek and also unexplained. Neither route yields a meaning.

Artie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 159 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Artie has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two quite different formal names can stand behind it, one Celtic and one Greek.
  • Short, warm and easy for a young child to say and spell.
  • It carries a real and now largely forgotten American naming practice.
What to consider
  • The name reads as masculine to most English speakers today.
  • Neither possible parent yields a recovered meaning.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the late nineteenth century.
