Where it comes from

The story of Aleeya

The Hebrew root alah, to go up, does a lot of work. An aliyah is the honor of being called up to the reading platform in synagogue, and the seven or so given each Sabbath are distributed as marks of respect. Aliyah la-regel, going up on foot, is the pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the three festivals, and the phrase reflects the city's elevation: one goes up to Jerusalem from anywhere in the country. And aliyah is the standard term for Jewish immigration to Israel, with the successive waves numbered, the First Aliyah from 1882 and so on; the opposite, emigration from Israel, is yeridah, going down. So the same noun names a ritual honor, a journey and a national policy, and in all three the metaphor is unchanged.

Hebrew aliyah, ascent

Aleeya is a respelling of Aliyah or Aaliyah. Hebrew aliyah means an ascent or going up, from alah, to rise. Arabic aliyah is a separate word, the feminine of ali, high or exalted, and gives the same American spellings. The two are unrelated and the record does not distinguish them. The peak is 2013.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
