Where it comes from

The story of Aleeyah

Aaliyah entered American naming from Arabic in the nineteen-eighties and became very widely used in the nineties, at which point the respellings began in earnest: Aliyah, Aleah, Aliya, Aleeyah and Aaliya all write the same sound. Separately, Aliyah has been given in Jewish families as a Hebrew name with its own meaning. The double e in this spelling fixes the long vowel for English readers, which is exactly what it is there to do.

Meaningscholars disagree

exalted, high; or an ascent

Two genuine roads. Arabic aliya, the feminine of ali, high or exalted, is a long-established name. Hebrew aliyah, an ascent or going up, is a modern Israeli name and a central word in Jewish life. They are unrelated and the American spellings do not distinguish them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both of its possible meanings are documented and both are good ones.
  • Ali and Lee are ready short forms and both are complete names.
  • The ending carries well when the name is called across a room.
What to consider
  • At least five spellings of this sound are in common use, so it will be written back wrongly.
  • Its two histories belong to different traditions, so the meaning depends on the family.
  • Aaliyah is far commoner and will be assumed by people writing quickly.
