Aaleyah
Feminine · “high”
Aaleyah is one of at least a dozen American spellings of an Arabic word for height. The doubled a at the front is not decoration: it is a transliteration convention, marking the long vowel of the Arabic aliya. What began as a way of writing a foreign sound accurately became, in American hands, a distinctive visual signature — and then a template that spawned spellings the Arabic never had.

The story of Aaleyah
Aliyah has been an ordinary Arabic name for centuries. Its American career is much shorter and has a clear cause: the singer Aaliyah, who used a doubled-a spelling, was a major figure from 1994 until her death in 2001, and the name entered the American top hundred in the years around that. The doubled a came from her family's transliteration and then became the marker everyone copied. Because the sound has four syllables and several plausible ways to write each of them, the spelling fragmented immediately: Aaliyah, Aliyah, Aleah, Aaliya, Alia, Aaleyah, Aliya. Aaleyah is one of those, keeping the doubled a and rewriting the middle.
Meaning
high, exalted
From the Arabic root '-l-w, meaning height and elevation. Aliya is the feminine of Ali, 'high, elevated', one of the most widely used names in the Muslim world. The meaning is settled and travels with every spelling. The Hebrew aliyah, the word for going up to Jerusalem and for immigration to Israel, comes from a related Semitic root, which is why the two names look and sound so similar without being the same name.

Pronouncing Aaleyah
ah-LEE-uh
Three or four syllables depending on how much of the final -yah is sounded; the stress is on the LEE. The doubled a at the front is a single long vowel, not two. Some American speakers say ay-uh-LEE-ah, giving the first a its English name, which is a step further from the Arabic.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aaleyah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenee climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record.
