The story of Aleya
Aleya in Bengali folklore is the marsh light that leads fishermen to their deaths or, in some tellings, warns them of danger — a genuine piece of Bengal delta tradition. Separately, the Arabic aliyah is a long-established name. Both routes brought Aleya to America, where it appears in the registers in current use.
Meaningscholars disagree
exalted; marsh light
Two routes. The Arabic aliyah, 'exalted', the feminine of ali. Or the Bengali aleya, the will-o'-the-wisp of the Bengal marshes, said in folklore to be the lights of dead fishermen. Both are genuine and the American record does not distinguish them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Dezirae test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aleya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dezirae climbed just as high around 2001, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dezirae's path sketches the road Aleya is walking now.

The trade-off
- The exalted meaning is transparent where the Arabic route holds.
- The Bengali marsh-light folklore is a genuinely striking second reading.
- Three syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
- The two origins are unrelated and the marsh light is an ominous image.
- The middle vowel splits between two readings.
- Aliyah and Aleah are both close enough to cause confusion.
