Where it comes from

The story of Dezirae

Bernardine Eugenie Desiree Clary was the daughter of a Marseille silk merchant. Napoleon proposed to her in 1795 and abandoned the engagement within months for Josephine de Beauharnais. Her sister married Napoleon's brother Joseph, and Desiree herself married Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a general who became one of Napoleon's marshals. In 1810 the Swedish Riksdag, needing an heir for the childless Charles XIII, elected Bernadotte. He became Charles XIV John, Desiree became Queen Desideria, and the House of Bernadotte has reigned in Sweden ever since. She disliked Stockholm and spent years back in Paris before finally settling there. The current Swedish king is her direct descendant, which makes a Marseille merchant's daughter jilted by Napoleon the ancestress of a European monarchy.

Meaning

French desiree, desired

Dezirae is a respelling of Desiree, the French feminine past participle of desirer, to desire, from Latin desiderare. It was used by early Christians in the Latin form Desiderata for a longed-for child. The z and the -ae ending are American respellings. The peak is 2001.

About 1 girl in 21,720 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Dezirae itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
