Where it comes from

The story of Kasey

Ó Cathasaigh families were prominent in several Irish counties, and emigration made Casey a common American surname. It crossed into given-name use in the twentieth century — helped by the ballad of Casey Jones, the engineer killed in 1900 — and moved to girls in the 1970s. The K respelling followed, and Kasey peaked in the mid-1980s.

Meaning

vigilant, watchful

From the Irish surname Ó Cathasaigh, 'descendant of Cathasach' — a personal name from cathasach, 'vigilant' or 'watchful'. The element cath, 'battle', sits inside it. The derivation is well documented, unusually for an Irish surname-name.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kasey went to 105 girls in 2025, but Casey and Kacey are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 544, which makes it the 494th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,378 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,955 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 15,307 for Kasey itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The vigilant meaning is transparent and unusually well documented for an Irish surname-name.
  • It works for either sex, which some families specifically want.
  • Bright and quick, with no pronunciation risk.
What to consider
  • Several spellings are in use and Casey is much the commonest.
  • It is thoroughly unisex and does not signal sex on paper.
  • It is closely dated to the 1980s in American records.
