The story of Zigmund
Lombard and Frankish law codes treat mundium as a property-like right: a bride's mundium passed from her father to her husband, and a price was paid for it. That makes the name element unusually concrete — a Sigmund is protected by victory, or holds guardianship through it. The name belongs to Germanic legend as Sigmund the Volsung, father of Sigurd, and to Polish royalty as Zygmunt, borne by three kings including Zygmunt August, the last of the Jagiellons. The American figures for the Zigmund spelling peak in 1916, with Central and Eastern European immigration.
Meaning
Germanic "victory protection"
From sigi, victory, plus mund, a hand and hence protection or guardianship. The mund element closes Edmund, Raymond, Osmund and Rosamund. In early medieval law mundium was the legal authority a man held over his wife, children and household, transferable at marriage; the word is the same. Zigmund is a spelling variant of Sigmund, and Zygmunt is the Polish form.

Zigmund's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Reynolds climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Reynolds's path sketches the road Zigmund is walking now.
