Where it comes from

The story of Zacharia

Two Zechariahs carry the name: the minor prophet whose book closes with a vision of the day of the Lord, and the father of John the Baptist, struck dumb until he wrote the child's name on a tablet. The Latin Zacharia was the standard form throughout the Middle Ages, and it survived into modern use in Germany, in the Arabic Zakariyya, and in East Africa through missionary Bible translation, where Zakaria is an ordinary Swahili name. Its American record is mixed: some bearers are from the English biblical revival, some from African and Middle Eastern families, and the 1989 peak sits inside the enormous American rise of Zachary in the same decade.

Meaning

The Lord has remembered

From Hebrew Zĕḵaryāh, from zāḵar, to remember, and the divine name Yah. The reading is settled. Greek gave Zacharias and Latin Zacharia; English forms Zachariah, Zachary and Zachery all descend from the same. The -a ending is the Latinized one and is also the standard Swahili and East African spelling.

Zacharia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 57 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zacharia went to 17 boys in 2025, but Zachariah and Zacharyah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 580, which makes it the 472nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,927 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 2,945 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,475 for Zacharia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and unusually warm — a promise remembered.
  • Zach is available instantly as an ordinary short form.
  • It is recognizable across Christian, Muslim and East African naming.
What to consider
  • Zachariah is the commoner English spelling and will be written for it.
  • Four syllables is long and the name will be shortened immediately.
  • Zachary is so dominant in America that the longer form reads as its formal version.
