The story of Thayne
Rank words in English record a consistent pattern: a title of high status began as the name of a job done for somebody more important. Cniht was a boy or a household servant and became knight. Marescalc was a horse servant, from Frankish, and became marshal, then Field Marshal. Stigweard was the keeper of the sty and became steward, then Stuart. Comes stabuli was the count of the stable and became constable. Chamberlain kept a room. Thegn meant one who serves, and by the tenth century a thegn was a landholder with military obligations, ranked below the ealdorman and above the ceorl. The Norman Conquest destroyed the class and the word survived mainly in Scotland and in Shakespeare, which is why Macbeth is Thane of Glamis and Cawdor and why almost nobody meets the word anywhere else.
