Veronique
Feminine · “Latin vera icon”
St Veronica may have been created out of a label. The cloth said to carry Christ's face was called the vera icon, the true image, and the name of the woman who is said to have wiped his face looks very much like that phrase turned into a person.

The story of Veronique
The story of a woman who wiped Christ's face on the way to Calvary, leaving an image on the cloth, is not in the Gospels. It appears in medieval devotional literature and became the sixth Station of the Cross. The relic itself, kept at St Peter's and known from at least the twelfth century, was called the vera icon, and the resemblance between that phrase and the name Veronica has been noticed since the middle ages. The likelihood is that the object came first and the saint was supplied to account for it, a process visible elsewhere: several saints appear to have been generated out of misread inscriptions or objects. The competing Greek derivation is philologically sounder, since Berenike is a real and well-attested name, and the two explanations have coexisted for centuries.

Latin vera icon, true image
Veronique is the French form of Veronica. Two derivations compete. One takes it from Greek Berenike, a Macedonian form of Pherenike, bringer of victory. The other, older in popular tradition, reads it as Latin vera and Greek eikon, true image, referring to the relic. Most scholars prefer the first and regard the second as a medieval explanation. The American peak is 1972.

The Maryjean test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Veronique's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maryjean climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maryjean's path sketches the road Veronique is walking now.
Veronique sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
