Maryjean
Feminine · “Mary”
Mary was the standard first element of an American double name, in the way that Mae was the standard second. Mary Jean, Mary Lou, Mary Beth, Mary Ann — said whole, every time, as one unit rather than as a name and a middle name. Jean is the Scottish form of Jane, which makes this two versions of two different Hebrew names sitting side by side.

The story of Maryjean
American Catholic families used Mary as a first element on a very large scale, partly out of devotion and partly because it left the second element free to do the identifying work; Protestant families in the South did the same thing for their own reasons. Jean came into English from Scotland, where it did the job Jane did in England. Put together and said whole, Mary Jean was one of the standard American women's names of the middle of the century, and the closed spelling is what happens when a form has one box for it.

Mary, and God is gracious
Mary comes from the Hebrew Miryam, whose meaning has never been established. Jean is the Scottish form of Jane, and so of Johanna, from the Hebrew Yohanan — God is gracious. That second half is documented and the first is not, which is the ordinary situation with double names: one half explains itself and the other does not.

The Roseline test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maryjean's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Roseline climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Roseline's path sketches the road Maryjean is walking now.
Maryjean sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Both halves are complete standing names with long histories.
- It offers two very different everyday names and a set of initials.
- The closed spelling survives databases, which the spaced version often does not.
- It will be split back into Mary Jean on official documents, and the family will spend time reuniting it.
- It belongs unmistakably to the middle of the twentieth century.
- People will try to say it as one word, which produces something no one intended.
