Our story of Tyran
The word tyrannos is not Greek in origin — it appears to be a loan, possibly from Lydian — and it enters Greek in the seventh century BC as a plain description of a ruler who has seized power outside the normal succession. Several early tyrants were popular reformers who broke aristocratic monopolies, and the poets who used the word first attach no moral weight to it. The pejorative sense develops in fifth-century Athens, where the memory of the Peisistratids and the ideology of democracy made one-man rule the thing to be defined against; Plato and Aristotle then fixed tyranny as the corrupt form of monarchy, and Latin and every European language inherited that. The name Tyran, peaking in 1978, has no connection to any of this — but the coincidence is the first thing anyone will raise, and it is better answered than ignored.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning. Tyran is an American formation on Ty-, a productive prefix drawn from Tyrone and Tyler, with the -ran or -an ending. It is not from the word tyrant, and no derivation connects the two; the resemblance is a coincidence of sound worth stating plainly. Tyrone, the likeliest stem, is an Irish county name, Tír Eoghain, the land of Eoghan.
