The story of Tuesday
The Germanic peoples took the Roman planetary week and translated it, substituting their own gods for the Roman ones: Mars became Tiw, Mercury became Woden, Jupiter became Thor, Venus became Frigg. Sunday, Monday and Saturday kept the sun, the moon and Saturn. The result is that English speakers name four Germanic deities every week without noticing. As a personal name, Tuesday belongs almost entirely to one bearer: the American actress born Susan Ker Weld in 1943 took the name from a childhood nickname, and its American record follows her career, with a best year of 1966.
Meaning
day of Tiw, the god of war and law
Old English Tiwesdaeg, the day of Tiw, translating Latin dies Martis, the day of Mars. Tiw, Norse Tyr, is the god who loses his hand binding the wolf Fenrir, an act of deliberate perjury made for the common good, which is why he is associated with both war and legal oaths. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are Woden's, Thor's and Frigg's by the same substitution.

The Genevia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tuesday's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Genevia climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Genevia's path sketches the road Tuesday is walking now.
