The distinction between the father's brother and the mother's brother matters because the two stand in quite different relations to a child in matters of inheritance, marriage arrangement and ritual duty; a language that needs to make the difference constantly will lexicalise it. English collapsed the distinctions in the medieval period, borrowing uncle, aunt, cousin and nephew wholesale from French and abandoning the Old English terms, which had separated the paternal and maternal lines. So the loss is comparatively recent. Tanay is a modern Indian name from this vocabulary; the American figures peak in 2005.
