Where it comes from

The story of Tallon

The talus is roughly cubic with four flat faces and two rounded ones, so it lands on one of four sides and can be scored — which made it the standard randomising device across the ancient Mediterranean and beyond. Greek astragaloi and Roman tali were used for games and for divination, and Latin retained separate words for four-sided knucklebones and six-sided cubic dice. The word survives in English anatomy as talus and in the phrase to be at the mercy of the dice; the French heel sense gave English talon, and the Spanish talón. Tallon as an American given name peaks in 2000.

Meaning

French "heel", by way of the bird's claw

From Old French talon, a heel, from Latin talus, the ankle or heel bone. English borrowed it in the fourteenth century for a bird of prey's claw, taking the hind claw as the heel. Tallon and Talon are also Irish and English surnames of uncertain origin, possibly from the same French word as a byname. The doubled l is a surname spelling.

Tallon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 62 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tallon went to 10 boys in 2025, but Talon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 185, which makes it the 744th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,935 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 9,233 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Tallon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight and never mispronounced.
  • Tal and Lon are ready short forms.
  • The word behind it has a documented and unusual history.
What to consider
  • Talon with one l is the ordinary English word and the commoner spelling.
  • The word names a bird of prey's claw, which is a specific image.
  • The 2000 peak dates a bearer fairly precisely.
