Where it comes from

The story of Stacia

The Greek verb histemi, to stand, produced an unusually wide family. Stasis is a standing, a position, and by extension a faction and then civil strife; Thucydides uses it for the internal wars that destroyed Greek cities, and the medical sense of a stoppage came much later. Ekstasis is standing outside oneself, which gives ecstasy. Systema is a standing-together, a system. Apostasis is a standing away, giving apostasy. Anastasis is a standing up again, and it is the word the New Testament uses for resurrection, both of Christ and of the dead generally. So a single verb of posture supplies Greek and then English with words for a riot, a system, a trance, a defection and the central claim of Christianity, and the name sits on the last of them.

Meaning

Greek anastasis, resurrection

Stacia is a short form of Anastasia, from Greek anastasis, a standing up or rising again, from ana, up, and histemi, to stand. It was used by early Christians for the resurrection and became a name through several martyrs. The same root gives stasis, static, ecstasy and system. The American peak is 1971.

Stacia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 303 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Stacia went to 10 girls in 2025, but Stasia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 17, which makes it the 943rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,514 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 94,545 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Stacia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Anastasia is available as the formal version.
  • Two syllables and six letters, compact and clear.
  • The Greek meaning is documented and significant.
What to consider
  • The syllable count varies between speakers.
  • Stacy is far commoner in American use.
  • It reads as a short form rather than a full name.
