Where it comes from

The story of Stasia

Slavic names were built as compounds and most of them are still transparent to speakers: Miroslav is peace and glory, Bogumil is dear to God, Vladimir is rule and peace or rule and greatness, Stanislaw is become glorious. They are wishes rather than descriptions. Stanislaw of Szczepanow was a bishop of Krakow killed in 1079 during a quarrel with King Boleslaw, by some accounts by the king in person and at the altar; the king was driven out of Poland and the bishop became the country's patron saint. The name has been ordinary in Poland ever since, and its feminine gives Stasia — which is also what Anastasia gives, from an entirely different direction.

Meaningscholars disagree

resurrection — or, in the Polish reading, becoming glorious

As a short form of Anastasia, the meaning is Greek anastasis, a rising up. As a short form of Stanislawa it is Slavic: stani, to become, with slav, glory. The two names have nothing in common and produce the same clip, and the record cannot tell them apart.

Stasia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 72 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Stasia went to 7 girls in 2025, but Stacia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 17, which makes it the 943rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,989 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 94,545 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Stasia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two documented parent names, both of them with long records in Europe.
  • Three short forms, two of which are full names elsewhere.
  • Two syllables with nothing hard to say once the vowel is settled.
What to consider
  • The first vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
  • It is a short form of two unrelated names, so the meaning depends on which family you are in.
  • It is strongly represented among the oldest generations and reads clearly as of that time.
