Where it comes from

The story of Sindy

Greek gods were addressed by dozens of epithets, most of them local, and a cult title usually names a place, a function or a story. Artemis is Kynthia from her birthplace on Delos, Ephesia at Ephesus, Agrotera the huntress, Orthia at Sparta, Brauronia at Brauron. Apollo is Delios from the same island, Pythios at Delphi, Lykeios of the wolves, Smintheus of the mice. The epithets are not decorations: a worshipper at Ephesus and one at Brauron were addressing goddesses with different rites, different images and arguably different identities, all called Artemis. Roman poets took the epithets up as elegant substitutes for the plain names, which is how Cynthia reached English poetry in the sixteenth century and then, by a long route through Lucinda and Cindy, an American birth certificate.

Meaning

Greek Kynthos, a mountain on Delos

Sindy is a spelling of Cindy, a short form of Cynthia, from Greek Kynthia, of Mount Kynthos on the island of Delos, an epithet of Artemis. Cindy also serves as a short form of Lucinda. The S spelling is a twentieth-century respelling and does not change the sound. The peak of this spelling is 1957.

Sindy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 88 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sindy went to 10 girls in 2025, but Cindy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 110, which makes it the 850th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,607 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 14,612 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Sindy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
