The story of Siddhant
Indian astronomy produced a series of siddhantas from the fifth century onward. Aryabhata's work of 499 computed the length of the sidereal year to within a few minutes and proposed that the earth rotates. Brahmagupta's Brahma Sphuta Siddhanta of 628 gave rules for computing with zero and with negative numbers, the earliest systematic treatment of either, and reached Baghdad in the eighth century, where it fed into Arabic mathematics and from there into Europe. The word itself remains ordinary in Hindi for a principle or a doctrine. The American figures for Siddhant peak in 2011, with South Asian immigration.
Meaning
Sanskrit "established conclusion, settled doctrine"
From siddha, accomplished or proved, plus anta, an end — the end of the matter, hence a demonstrated conclusion. The word is technical in Indian logic, where a debate proceeds from the opponent's position to the siddhanta, and in astronomy, where a siddhanta is a systematic treatise. Siddhant is the modern Hindi form of the name.
