The story of Shaye
Irish underwent a wave of consonant weakening in the medieval period: sounds between vowels softened and then disappeared, leaving spellings full of gh, dh, bh and mh that mark consonants no longer said. The result is a written language that looks unrelated to the spoken one to an outsider, and is in fact perfectly regular to anyone who knows which letters have gone quiet. English did the same thing on a smaller scale — night, thought, daughter — and for the same reason: the spelling was fixed before the sound changed. The O'Shea family were lords in Kerry; the American respelling Shaye peaks in 1989.
Meaningscholars disagree
Irish, of contested sense — possibly "hawk-like" or "stately"
From Ó Séaghdha, anglicized as O'Shea and Shea. The personal name Séaghdha is variously read as hawk-like, fine or stately, and none of these is established. The gh in the middle is silent in modern Irish and marks a consonant that was pronounced in the medieval language. Shaye is a modern American respelling of Shea or Shay.

The Sipriano test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shaye's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sipriano climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sipriano's path sketches the road Shaye is walking now.
Shaye sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable, easy to say and never mispronounced.
- It carries a genuine Irish surname with a long history.
- It works for either sex without adjustment.
- Shea and Shay are the standard spellings.
- The meaning of the Irish original is genuinely unsettled.
- It reads as unisex, so it does not signal sex on its own.
