The story of Saverio
Francis Xavier co-founded the Jesuits with Ignatius of Loyola in 1534 and spent the rest of his life as a missionary in India, Malacca and Japan, dying in 1552 within sight of China. The Jesuit order carried his name across the Catholic world, and it became one of the most widely used given names in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Latin America — an unusual case, since it began as a surname taken from a place. Etxeberria remains one of the most common Basque surnames in its own right. The American figures for Saverio peak in 1914, with Italian immigration.
Meaning
Basque "the new house"
From Basque etxe, a house, plus berri, new, with the article -a: Etxeberria, the new house. The castle in Navarre gave its name to the family, and Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta took it as his own. Saverio is the Italian form, Xavier the Spanish and French, Javier the modern Spanish spelling. Basque is a language isolate with no known relatives anywhere.
