The story of Ronak
Kurdish is spoken by perhaps thirty million people across Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and the diaspora, and it has never had a single state or a single script. Kurmanji, the northern dialect, is written in a Latin alphabet devised by Celadet Ali Bedirxan in the 1930s. Sorani, the central dialect, is written in a modified Arabic script in Iraq and Iran. Soviet Kurds used Cyrillic. Turkey banned the language in public life for decades and its written use only became broadly legal in the 2000s. The result is that two Kurds may share a language and be unable to read each other's writing, and that standardization, which for most European languages was settled by a state and a printing industry centuries ago, remains an open question. The name Ronak is written three ways for that reason.
