Galvin
Masculine · “bright white”
Luigi Galvani made a dead frog's leg twitch with a spark in the 1780s and thought he had found the electricity of life. He was wrong about the cause and his argument with Volta about it produced the battery. His name survives in galvanize, and in galvanized iron, which has nothing to do with any of it.

The story of Galvin
Galvani's frog was on a table near a machine producing sparks and its leg jumped when touched with a scalpel. He concluded there was an intrinsic animal electricity. Volta thought the electricity came from the two dissimilar metals in contact, built a stack of metal discs to prove it, and invented the battery in the process — so the argument was more productive than the theory. Galvanism entered the language for electrical stimulation and then, loosely, for jolting anything into action. Galvanized iron is a later and quite separate borrowing: the zinc coating on it has nothing to do with electricity or with Galvani, and the name was applied by an industry that liked the sound of it.
Meaning
bright white
From the Irish surname O Gealbhain: geal, bright or white, with ban, white — two words for the same thing stacked, which Irish descriptive names do more than once. The Italian scientist's surname is unrelated and is a coincidence of spelling.

The Ersel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Galvin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ersel climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ersel's path sketches the road Galvin is walking now.
Galvin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Irish meaning with both elements traceable to living words.
- Two syllables that everyone reads correctly on sight.
- Vin works as a short form and is a name in its own right.
- It is one letter from Calvin, which is much commoner and will be substituted.
- The meaning is two words for white stacked, which is either charming or redundant.
- It is close to the verb galvanize, and people who notice will say so.
