Roads went where rivers could be crossed, markets grew where roads met, and towns grew at markets — so a great many important places are named for a crossing: Oxford, the oxen's ford; Stratford, the ford on a Roman street; Bradford, the broad ford; Hertford, the hart's ford; Frankfurt am Main, where the Franks crossed. Bridges came later and the names stayed. Rockford, Illinois, was founded in 1834 at a rocky crossing of the Rock River and named for it — the same logic operating two thousand years after the English examples.
