Our story of Rock
Hollywood renamed people industrially in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and the names it invented tell you what the studios thought a leading man should sound like. Roy Fitzgerald became Rock Hudson in 1948, reportedly assembled from the Rock of Gibraltar and the Hudson River, and he was one of the biggest box-office draws in America through the 1950s. The American birth records follow: Rock is barely present before 1950 and peaks in 1957, at the height of his career, then declines with him. Rocco, the Italian saint's name, has its own quite separate American history through Italian families and is still in use; Rock as a given name is largely a product of one decade and one studio's idea of masculinity.

As a shortening of Italian Rocco the picture is different: Rocco descends from a Germanic element hrok, rest or repose, or possibly from a word for a crow, and its own etymology is not settled.
