The story of Rook
Rooks nest in colonies and were noticed enough in English to give a surname for someone crow-like in coloring or manner. The chess piece came west with the game from Persia and India, its chariot forgotten and replaced by a castle. Rook entered American given-name use in the 2010s and is in current use.
Meaning
rook, crow
From the Old English hroc, 'rook', imitative of the bird's call. The chess rook is a separate word from the Persian rukh, a chariot, which reached Europe through Arabic and was reinterpreted as a tower. The bird name is ordinary English and the meaning undisputed.

About 1 boy in 16,583 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 21,898 for Rook itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jafet test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rook's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jafet climbed just as high around 2001, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jafet's path sketches the road Rook is walking now.

The trade-off
- That the bird and the chess piece are unrelated words is a first-rate fact.
- One syllable, firm, and never mispronounced.
- The chariot-to-castle history of the chess piece is genuinely good.
- It is an ordinary English noun with two separate meanings.
- The affectionate stretch collides with 'rookie'.
- It is very short and very new as a given name.
