Where it comes from

The story of Rianne

Rhiannon appears in the first and third branches of the Mabinogi. She rides past Pwyll on a white horse at a walking pace, and no rider can overtake her however hard they gallop, until he simply asks her to stop. She chooses him over the suitor her family intended. Later her infant son disappears and she is accused of killing him; her penance is to sit at the gate of the court, tell the story to every arriving visitor and offer to carry them on her back. The child is found and returned. Scholars have long connected her to a horse goddess, the Gaulish Epona or an insular equivalent, on the strength of the horse, the accusation and the name Rigantona, great queen, though the reconstruction is not universally accepted.

Celtic Rigantona, great queen

Rianne is most likely a short form of Rhiannon, from a reconstructed Celtic Rigantona, great queen, built on the same rig- root as Latin rex and Irish ri. It may equally be a Dutch or French form of Rihanna or a feminine of Ryan. The Welsh derivation is the best documented of the three. The American peak is 1993.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rianne went to 10 girls in 2025, but Ryanne is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 37, which makes it the 923rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,534 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 43,440 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Rianne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
