Where it comes from

The story of Jory

Cornish is a Brittonic language, closer to Welsh and Breton than to anything English, and it retreated westward for a thousand years until the last community of everyday speakers disappeared in the eighteenth century; Dolly Pentreath of Mousehole, who died in 1777, is traditionally called the last monolingual speaker, though the language limped on in fragments after her. What survived best was the name stock and the place names: every Tre-, Pol- and Pen- on the map of Cornwall is Cornish, and personal names like Jago for James, Jory for George, Petroc, Morwenna and Loveday stayed in use in families long after the sentences around them had become English. The language has since been revived, with several hundred speakers, and the names came back with it.

Jory sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

About 1 girl in 22,638 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Jory itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables and four letters.
  • It works for either sex, which suits a middle name.
  • The Cornish tradition behind it is genuine and documented.
What to consider
  • It is read as male in Cornwall and as a variant of Jorie in America.
  • The Cornish connection is invisible without explanation.
  • The 1950 peak dates its American use.
