Our story of Rashon
The vowel in dawn has been in trouble for a century. English spells it aw, au, augh, ough, o and a — dawn, cause, taught, bought, dog, all — because the spellings come from different historical sources that fell together long ago. And now the sound itself is going: across most of the western and central United States and much of Canada, the vowels of cot and caught have merged, so Don and Dawn are homophones and the six spellings distinguish nothing at all. The merger is spreading, and it is one of the largest sound changes currently underway in English. For a name it means the -on and -awn spellings of this family are not just interchangeable but increasingly indistinguishable even to careful speakers. Rashon peaks in 1982.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited meaning. Ra- is a created American prefix, probably drawn from Ray; Shon is a respelling of Sean, the Irish form of John. The compound has no documented reading. The -on spelling represents the same vowel as the -awn of Rashawn; nothing audible separates them for most American speakers.

Rashon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rande climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rande's path sketches the road Rashon is walking now.

The trade-off
- Shon works as a complete short form and is entirely conventional.
- The back-stress pattern is shared with many familiar names.
- It is read correctly on sight by most American speakers.
- Rashawn is the more common spelling and will be substituted.
- The front clip collides with an unpleasant English word.
- There is no meaning to give behind the compound.
