Where it comes from

Our story of Rashard

Two suffixes in English started as neutral or complimentary and ended as insults, and both came through French. One is -ard, from the Germanic element meaning brave: it entered French as a suffix on nouns and produced a run of derogatory words — coward, dullard, laggard, sluggard, drunkard, bastard, braggart — while remaining perfectly respectable inside the names it came from. The other is -rel, from a French diminutive, which gave scoundrel, wastrel and mongrel. Neither taints the names. Richard, Bernard, Howard and Leonard are unaffected, and so is a modern formation like Rashard, because names are read whole rather than parsed into pieces. That insulation is worth noticing: it is why a name can contain a syllable that would be offensive in a word and cause nobody any trouble. Rashard peaks in 1987.

Not established

No inherited meaning. Ra- is a created American prefix, probably drawn from Ray. The -ard ending here comes from names such as Richard and Bernard, where it is Germanic hard, brave or strong. Rashard may also be a respelling of Rashad, from Arabic rushd, right guidance. The record does not distinguish them.
