Where it comes from

Our story of Nallely

The merger of ll and y is called yeismo, and it has swept most of the Spanish-speaking world over the last few centuries; in Mexico the two letters are now completely identical in speech. For a word transmitted by ear, that means the spelling is a coin toss, which is why Nayeli, Nallely, Nayely and Nalleli all appear in Mexican records in comparable numbers, and why families frequently disagree about which is correct. There is no correct one. Nallely's best year in United States records is 2001, and its rise in the 1990s was fast enough to look like a media-driven wave, though no single source has been documented for it. What can be said honestly is that it is Mexican, recent, and that the Zapotec meaning attached to it is not real.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name is widely printed as Zapotec for I love you, and that gloss is not supported by any Zapotec dictionary or grammar; it should be treated as invented. What is documented is the name's use: it appears in Mexican records from the 1980s, spreads quickly, and has no established source. The ll and y spellings are interchangeable because Mexican Spanish merged the two sounds.

Pronouncing Nallely

nah-YEH-lee

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The ll is a y sound throughout Mexico; a Spaniard from a conservative dialect would distinguish it, but almost nobody does now.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three open syllables with no clusters, so it is very easy to say.
  • Nay works as a short form in English-speaking settings.
  • Widely recognized across Mexico and the American southwest.
What to consider
  • An invented Zapotec meaning is printed for it almost everywhere.
  • Four spellings circulate and none is more correct than the others.
  • English speakers will read the ll as an English l.
