Mellanie is a Greek word for black with two American adjustments. Melanie descends from melas, dark, by way of a Roman noblewoman who gave away one of the largest fortunes in the empire and was made a saint for it. The doubled l and the -ie ending are both twentieth century and both silent.

The story of Mellanie
The name belonged to two Roman women of the same family, both venerated, the younger of whom sold enormous estates across the empire and gave the proceeds away in the early fifth century. It traveled from there into French as Melanie and reached English use in the nineteenth century, quietly. What made it ordinary in America was a novel: the Melanie of Gone with the Wind is the patient, unglamorous one, and the film that followed put the name in front of an enormous audience and returned it to circulation within a few years. The respellings came afterward, as they always do.
Meaning
dark; black
Greek melas means black or dark, and melaina is its feminine — the same root that gives English melancholy, which was named for a supposed black bile, and melanin. The name is a plain color word, applied to a person the way Rufus and Blanche were, and it says nothing more than that. The derivation is not disputed. Neither the doubled l nor the -ie ending contributes anything to it.

MEL-uh-nee, three syllables, stress at the front, the middle vowel almost gone. The doubled l changes nothing — English doubles a consonant after a short stressed vowel as a spelling habit, and the vowel here was already short.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- The meaning is a single plain word with a settled and well-documented derivation.
- Mel and Lanie are both available and they sound like two different names.
- The sound is entirely familiar and is never mispronounced by anyone.
- Melanie is the standard spelling and this one will be rewritten as that on essentially every document.
- The doubled l is silent, so it must be dictated and will still be dropped.
- The name is closely tied to one American generation, and it places a person fairly precisely in time.
