The story of Preston
The Preston Guild Merchant was first recorded by charter in 1179 and confirmed the town's right to control who could trade there. From 1542 it was held every twenty years without fail, and it has been kept up ever since apart from a break during the Second World War, which shifted the cycle. The celebration runs for a week or more, with processions, trades displays, a guild court and civic ceremonial, and it draws people back to the town from around the world. The phrase once every Preston Guild is standard in Lancashire for a rare event and is the only English idiom built on a municipal calendar. Everything else about guild merchants in England has been swept away by later law; Preston kept the party.

Preston's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ellanor climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ellanor's path sketches the road Preston is walking now.
